This episode focuses on Sawyer.

In Flashbacks

We see the fateful night that young James Ford witnesses the death of his mom and suicide of his dad.  Not fun.  What a crappy thing for a kid to deal with. We already found out about him taking the name “sawyer” from the conman who swindled his folks and learned about the vendetta he has for him.  Years later an associate finds Ford/Sawyer and tells him that he knows that the real Sawyer is living under an alias in Australia.  “Our” Sawyer heads down under and shoots the guy dead only to find out its not his man.

Interesting backstory – especially considering what we find out later about the identity of the original Sawyer.  The really intriguing thing that happens in this flashback, however, is Sawyer meeting Christian Shephard (Jack’s dad) in a bar.  Christian is drowning his miseries and talking about a son he loves but who thinks he (Christian) hates him (Jack).  Interestingly it’s Christian who(unknowingly?) pushes Sawyer (who’s having doubts) to go out the door and follow through on his vendetta to kill who he thinks to be the original Sawyer.

On the Island

A boar tears apart Sawyers tent leading him on another vendetta.  Kate joins him on his boar hunt and soe interesting chemistry develops and we find out that they both have killed someone in their past.  In the end even though Sawyer has the chance to kill the boar he doesn’t, recognizing the similarities between the boar and the innocent man he killed in Australia.

Is it just me or does this bopar look an awful lot like ALF?

In the final scene Sawyer realizes based on a turn of phrase that Jack must be the son of the man who he met in the bar in Australia but he keeps this info to himself.  All-in-all not a bad little episode, but no huge revelations in my opinion.

Note: Like I said last post, I’m keeping these next few short until I’m caught up on the rewatch.  For a more detailed analysis of Episodes 1×13-16 check out JOpinionated’s Lost Blog!

  1. I can recall Kate pointing out how ludicrous James’ vendetta against the real Sawyer and I must say that I heartily agree. There has always been something immature about James in that he was able to maintain a desire for vengeance since the age of eight, for a man who was only guilty of swindling the Fords. But it was James’ dad – Mr. Ford – who really destroyed the family with his act of murder and suicide. But instead of acknowledging this, Sawyer decided to place all of the blame on Anthony Cooper’s shoulders. And he committed two murders to achieve his goal of vengeance. That is just pathetic.
